Rural Transport Scheme

Following is a text of a speech given recently to Muintir na Tire about the Rural Transport Scheme, and the dangers should this scheme be terminated.
The speech can be downloaded Here.

As we gather here today let us reflect on the aims and ambitions of Muintir na Tíre. Let us speculate on how our founder Canon Hayes might respond on seeing Rural Isolation once again become a problem with the threatened snipping of our Rural Transport Programme. Canon Hayes championed the idea of Community Development. His strategy was to promote neighbourliness and self reliance and to inspire individuals to devote themselves to the good of their community. Canon Hayes’ vision would be akin to the current strategy of the National Positive Aging Groups, which seeks to make Ireland a better place in which to grow old.

In general, policy makers and service planners work out how to manage and deliver services in specific areas. From such deliberations came the Rural Transport Programme which provides transport services where they previously didn’t exist, which connects people living in rural areas with their villages and towns, which enables rural dwellers to access services and MOST IMPORTANTLY helps to combat social exclusion and in many cases improve health and well being.

The Rural Transport Scheme operates in Killeagh every Friday.  A bus leaves from near the church, and travels to Mt. Uniake, Dangan, and via Park, to Youghal.

The success of the Rural Transport Scheme is well known and appreciated by you all.  As a voluntary co-ordinator on behalf of Killeagh / Inch Community Council  I have seen how the scheme has transformed lives.  As on organiser of the Health Seminars launched here today, I have seen the transport scheme utilised to ferry 120 people to Seminars at places like Ballinascarthy, Newcestown and Ballynoe.  If snips are about saving, I am absolutely convinced that tampering with the Rural Transport Scheme makes no economic sense because in reality the operation of this scheme and its remarkable success creates a massive saving in health, hospital and caring expenses.

Were Canon Hayes here today he would urge those in pivotal positions to maintain, develop and expand the Rural Transport Scheme.  And so I very sincerely, on behalf of Cork County Federation Muintir ná Tíre, appeal to all present, to all in County Hall, to those in this City and County who know the intrinsic value of the Rural Transport Scheme to do everything in their power to ensure that it remains in place.

The Rural Transport Scheme is a vital social service which we cannot afford to lose.

IT WILL ONLY SURVIVE THE CURRENT THREAT IF GOOD PEOPLE … BY THEIR WORDS AND ACTIONS ENSURE THAT IT BE RETAINED
